Become a Volunteer Firefighter

Joining the fire service is a very challenging endeavor. It is not for everyone. The commitment is extensive, but so are the rewards. If you believe that you have the dedication, time, skills, physical ability, and desire, then please read on.

Types of Volunteers

  • The volunteer firefighter who lives in or near the fire station and plans to service his/her department for years.
  • The volunteer firefighter who works shifts, gets training & experience, and has the goal of getting hired by a career fire department.

Benefits of Volunteering

There are many good reasons for becoming a Volunteer Firefighter. Being a firefighter is a challenging, satisfying, and rewarding experience.

Friendship and camaraderie are a big part of being a firefighter at our department. There is a special connection between firefighters that develops when you have a group of people that—on a moment’s notice at any time of day or night—respond to help a neighbor. This fact is reflected by the large number of members, both past and present, in regular attendance at our department’s social functions.

Finally, one of the biggest benefits of becoming a volunteer firefighter at KCFD 20 is the enormous amount of training provided. We fully support the personal and professional development of our volunteers. The training we provide is not just applicable to firefighting; it is useful in all aspects of life.
